Spurrier in Historic GB Call UP

Plymouth Basketball Club star Isaac Spurrier has been selected in the final 12 for the Great Britain Under 16s. Isaac will represent his country at the FIBA Under 16s European Championships Division B in Pitesti, Romania from the 4-14th August. Isaac becomes the first ever Plymouth born player to pull on a GB jersey at a FIBA European Championships.

The selection comes after participating in three selection camps that took place in Myerscough and Isaacs participation in the Dussman Trophy in Luxembourg against the hosts, Ireland and the Netherlands, respectively. The final group of 12 has been whittled down from an initial group of 24 players who were selected following national trials.

Speaking on his historic selection Isaac said

“I have worked really hard this summer at the selection camps and I am very excited to represent GB in the European championships. Thank you to everyone who has helped me get here, my coaches and teammates and especially my family.”

The GB Under 16s Head Coach Troy Culley said regarding the young PBC star

“Isaac has worked incredibly hard to be selected for the final 12 and travel to Romania with us. He is a smart player who has a good feel for the game and has good IQ. He gives us some good size on the wing and different looks offensively. I think defensively he has grown throughout the programme and his someone who can defend multiple positions which is beneficial for us. Offensively he is effective when cutting off the ball and off post actions. I am looking forward to having him as part of the group.”

About the build up to the European Championships Culley added “These performances were more than just warm-up games, but invaluable learning experiences against national team competition.”

Ahead of their opening game against Estonia on Friday, he continued “With the foundation we've built, and lessons learned from last year, we're ready to push beyond what we were previously capable of and see how far we can go. “

GB are drawn in Group B and will face Hungary, Ukraine, Estonia and Norway with the hope of finishing in the top two and progressing to the quarter finals.
