#Born2Coach Story - Harry Burrows

In our final #born2coach story, as part of UK Coaching Week, we hear from Under 18s assistant Harry Burrows. Harry progressed through the club as a junior until Under 18s. He is now helping the next generation as a coach whilst completing his studies in Sports Science at Plymouth Marjon University.

What is great coaching to you?

I would say its about having a positive impact on young people in the club. To do that you need to create the right environment which is fun but also that players want to improve and get better. To do that you need to involve the players to see what they want from it, they are just as important when creating this environment.

How does coaching help you?

Coaching has helped me develop my interpersonal skills, especially communicating. In coaching you will have talk to to a lot of people, especially young people and groups, and it has definitely helped improved my confidence in these areas. I have built on these skills which are vital for me in developing the type of sessions that help players. My knowledge and understanding of basketball has also grown from immersing myself in coaching. I am constantly learning new ways to develop sessions, players and make sure the right progressions are in place.

What are the next steps for your development?

This would be to get my next coaching qualification, I have recently passed my Basketball England Level 2. I would like to study more of the coaches within the club as well. There is a lot of experience and I think it would be beneficial for me to watch them, develop my knowledge and begin to understand what they do in their session and why. I think this would be valuable as we are all trying to do things to benefit the players in the club.

Thanks Harry!
